Twitter Etiquette?

I've been a twitter for a little over a week now and I am sure I have made about a year's worth of faux pas!

I see some twitters saying good morning (signing in), others saying good night (signing out) and others posting a URL to their latest posts. Is this what you do or do you just say whatever (this is sadly what I am doing right now)?

And then there's the whole reply thing--do I answer everyone's comments and more importantly do I reply when they respond to me? What is the appropriate thing to do in these situations?

Then there's the follow thing. I have had a few people (men) begin to 'follow' me and I am not going to follow them and I really don't want them to follow me. How do I handle this?

So twitter mommies, help a newbie out--what are the twitter rules?

I do not get twitter. I don't yet have an account, because I am still not sure what the point is.

I do not follow everyone that follows me, probably not good etiquette. I sometimes even block certain creepy people that start following me, it gives me the heebie jeebies *shiver*.

I always check out people's websites when they start following me to see if I approve of them knowing all the details of my life ;)

The hard part? No rules! HA!

I do reply to people if I want to keep the conversation going or if I care enough. There are about 4 or 5 people on that I "converse" with pretty regulary, including the above commenter (Leslie)!

I don't follow everyone that follows me and like Leslie said, if I don't know them and they start following me then I check out their site and info. And if I don't like 'em I just hit the "block" button and do just that!

I think you can just block the creeps. I love Twitter! It's a fun and easy way to connect with readers and other bloggers. I have found some old friends on there too and we can easly send direct messages back and forth.

I wish I could help you out my friend...but I don't know anything about Twitter :( Good luck!

I don't follow everyone who is following me. And I don't "sign in" or "sign out", either. Like Elaine said, there really aren't any "rules". I really don't tweet that much... but I do think it's fun.

I'm new to it as well. I don't sign in and out. I respond when I have something to say to someone. Or some insight from my day.

Although I think it's hard to follow someone that only responds to others. It makes their stream a bit disjointed if you don't see the other part of the conversation!

I have an email to send you on twitter etiquette!

I have no clue about twitter.. I have a hard enough time keeping up with my blog, the blogs I read, the birthboards groups I have, facebook and myspace(which I hardly ever remember to look at) So I think I need to stay far far away from Twitter.

Surprisingly, we like Twitter. There is nothing based in logic or rational thinking to support our fondness for it either.

We do not follow everyone who follows us and we have had to block some very creepy looking/sounding people. Very creepy.

Nor do we respond to every single Tweet someone sends us, but we do try with most. It is fun to try and update things in that few words!

Hope this helps,
tp

I'm glad you posted this....I immediately read all your readers comments because I didn't know the rules either...I'm just going with the flow so far.

See, I don't have time for conversations like so many other peeps on twitter seem to have, so I just try to make a status (like facebook) report.

I so don't follow the rules...

I reply only if people directly send me a message. I blog, that keeps me busy enough.

See, this is exactly the reason I don't get on Twitter. I'm thinking, I can barely steal away a moment here or there to check email. How in the world am I supposed to respond to tweets? I dont' have a cell phone that does text messaging... yes, you think it does and i don't know it.... let me assure you, it doesn't send or receieve text messages because I've tried to send/receive but nothing happnes. Anyway, it's just another time suck. My opinion, get out while the gettin's good!

Whenever someone follows me, I click on their blog and if it is not a normal looking mommy blog, i delete it. Many of them are spam. I don't like random unknown people following me.

But then I blog, so that makes no sense, huh? Oh well.

I only follow people I really care to keep up with. I was following someone who tweeted practically every time she scratched her nose - drove me nuts. Before I follow someone I click on them and see how often they tweet. If they tweet every 10 min about totally banal things, I will not follow them.

I am not anonymous. That was me. I don't know why it came out anonymous! Sorry!

Missy's comment made me laugh! I am a terrible Twitterer - I always forget to update - but I echo pretty much everything she said. :)
